The Telegraph

"Richard Muirhead's tiny smokehouse in the grounds of Brougham Hall is a local treasure. Most of the ingredients come from within Cumbria. The smoked salmon is superb, some of the best I have tasted".

Charles Gough's Old Faithful

Charles Gough's Old Faithful

Price: £3.00

The lightest and fruitiest of Tirril's range. Pale golden, aromatic and well hopped, anideal summer ale. Named after Charles Gough's dog. Gough lost his way travelling to the Quaker meeting house in Grasmere and fell from the notrious Striding Edge. His remains were found months later, only identified by the name in his hat. Amazingly his faithful hound still stood guard over his body. Both Wordsworth and Keats wrote poems about the event. His few remains are buried in the Quaker graveyard in Tirril. Hence he is the only one of our characters still resident in the village.

Gently hopped with aromatic goldings, amber bitter and proving a tremendous hit on its first trials. The beer takes its name from Tirril Brewery¹s home in Brougham Hall, Englands largest country house restoration project. Here we have re-occupied the 1823 brewing rooms alongside other craft activities including a silversmith, a forge and a smokerie, all of which are open to the public. The coat of arms being reproduced with the kind permission of Lord Brougham.

Price: £3.00

Lightly hopped with goldings and fuggles, golden brown, a highly popular session beer. Named after the landlord and brewer at the Queen's Head Inn in the 1930's, when the pub was marked as a brewery on the Ordnance Survey maps. John Bewsher, a local wheelwright from Barton, leased the Inn from the Wordsworth brothers who managed it as part of their young nephew¹s estate. The signed and wax-sealed indenture in the bar was the final rental between Bewsher, William Wordsworth and his brother Chris.
