OLD SMOKEHOUSE SCOOPS THREE FINE FOOD OSCARS
GOURMET foods made in Penrith by the Old Smokehouse have scooped three national accolades in the 2004 Great Taste Awards, it was announced this week. |
The prestigious annual awards are regarded as the Oscars of Britains fine food industry, and are fiercely competed for by hundreds of specialist producers across the country.
Food experts judging the entries awarded a gold medal for the Old Smokehouses acclaimed Fellman sausages, and bronzes for its coconut and lemongrass roasted salmon, and smoked Scottish salmon.
These latest distinctions bring to 14 the number of awards received by the Brougham Hall-based business in the Great Taste Awards in the past three years.
New owner of the Old Smokehouse, Richard Muirhead, says he and his five staff are thrilled at the latest awards. Richard recently took over the business from former owners, Johanna Hampson and Georgina Perkins, who had run the Smokehouse for the past four years.
Born in Penrith, Richard started a career in catering after leaving Ullswater school, working first for a local bakery and then brewers Jennings as a chef. He also set up and owns one of Cumbrias largest independent specialist cleaning firms.
To achieve the taste and texture which gives our produce its distinctive qualities takes time, and cant be rushed, said Richard.
We also rely on the very high standards of our locally supplied ingredients including the pork from Cumbrian farms which is crucial to our Fellman sausages.
These latest awards are a great boost, and are already prompting enquiries from throughout the country, added Richard, who lives in Penrith with his wife Christine and their two young daughters.
