"Richard Muirhead's tiny smokehouse in the grounds of Brougham Hall is a local treasure. Most of the ingredients come from within Cumbria. The smoked salmon is superb, some of the best I have tasted".
TWO university friends have set up a company to provide top people’s stores in London with classy food from Cumbria.
They are planning to supply the county’s finest foods to Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Harvey Nichols, as well as smaller smart shops.
The scheme is the brainchild of 23-year-olds Thomas Sowler and Oliver Nohl-Oser who met at Newcastle University.
The pair aim to move into a business unit next to us at Brougham Hall.

The idea is for local producers to send their food there and it will then be shipped down to London.
The company – called The Cumbrian Sausage – will be launched at a special tasting event in London on Tuesday, with local producers such as The Old Smokehouse and Truffles chocolates among those represented.
Mr Sowler said: “There are a lot of foods from Somerset and Devon available in London, but not much from Cumbria.
“We want to promote quality food and hopefully it will encourage more people to buy from the county and to visit for its’ produce.”
"We went to extreme measures to find the best producers. This involved many delicious tastings, and interesting tours around farms. There are companies in Cumbria who buy products wherever they find them cheapest, slap a Cumbrian label on the product, and pass it off as Cumbrian food - we have avoided all such companies!"
